A beautiful day in Pittsburgh
Wow, what weather we have had here in the fine city of Pittsburgh. Tulips are in bloom, I am awoken by birdsong, the cafes have opened sidewalk seating and people walk the parks; I believe it fair to say spring has arrived. In spite of my limited experience with the harsh Pennsylvania winter, I will not be missing the snow.
Today marks my twenty-eighth year and I find myself in a state of introspection, which is not unusual for this time of the year; and I must say things are going quite well. I have now worked as visual designer at MAYA for just short of two months which has involved some incredible projects spanning interface design, some Web design, product design, and more; hence my infrequent activity on this site. I am a bit more settled now and will be more up-to-date here on smallTransport.
Which brings me to another subject: the redesign. Yes, I wish it looked as well on all displays as it does on my powerbook but not everyone has a mac. One of the many, many reasons to get an Apple upon your next computer purchase. As for the redesign, I went with a dark palette to emphasize imagery, do something a little different from what is commonly encountered in the Web Standards design world and most importantly – because I love black. A certain someone I work with calls it “Darth Vader” but I find black has class, is timeless and appealing (and Mr. Oxton likes it so there!).
Something I would like to share with my dear friends and readers with regard to design is that the future of computing lies in pervasive computing. In short, the principal is that a given set or type of information will not be tied to a particular device. This is a very exciting space in the realm of technological development and has enormous implications for interaction/visual designers. A few interesting examples of development in this space are found at Amient Devices, Information Aesthetics, and some of the work at Interaction Ivrea (where one would find Didier Hilhorst).
So, if you have some interesting links or thoughts on pervasive computing, comments on the new smallTransport site, or would simply like to say hello, be heard via the form below. We are listening. – Cheers
I am buying a 15-inch PowerBook as soon as Tiger comes out, so in the near future, I too will be able to experience this site in all its Mac wonder.

Aarhus in Denmark is the proud hometown of one of the worlds leading Pervasive Computing research centres. You’ll find more info on the web-site – tjeck out the “projects” area.
