Apple To Redesign Their Site?
A couple of days ago, a friend sent me a link to this job description from Apple thinking it may be of interest. Well, yes it is of interest to me and it will be of interest to about a million other folks as well. As crazy as it may sound, the posting of this job availability is not interesting to me as a potential career path. No, my attention is elsewhere. The possibility that Apple will soon be redeveloping their much loved and imitated Web presence is what grabs my attention.
The first thing that comes to my mind is a sense of awe inspired by the questions “how will they approach the redesign of the site” and “what will it look like”. The current Apple.com site though beautiful and incredibly trend setting has served the company for a number of years. Considering the incredible growth Apple has experienced through product innovation and what could be a redefining of its business strategy with the introduction of the iPod Shuffle and Mac mini wouldn’t you say it is time for an updated site? I would say so.
The second question that comes to mind, is “who will be responsible for the new site.” Well, we know that Eric Meyer has at the very least done some consulting with Apple. We also know that the very talented Dunstan Orchard has been picked up by the design Mecca. That is the beginnings of a killer Web development team if you ask me. Kinda makes you wonder who else has been talking with Apple doesn’t it? I will certainly be keeping my eyes and ears open.
Then again, maybe I am off my rocker and Apple is simply looking to hire a Web designer to keep things going around there. Who knows, maybe Dunstan is developing something entirely different for Apple like the interface for a pda or making sure the site is up to accessibility standards. I am gonna go out on a limb here, but my money is on the possibility of a redesign or maybe a Web Standards (CSS/xhtml) update.
Has anyone else been thinking this? Know of any other indications of a redesign?

If there is a redesign i bet it will be in march when tiger is released, maybe they will dull down the white gel layout.

The Jaguar style needs to be updated to match the look and feel of the current product lines…....Tiger?
I like the education page they have…..
http://www.apple.com/education/hed/students/
Very nice use of Flash.
maybe just apply that style to a CSS driven XHTML layout…..??
But all and all its still a great looking and functioning website…..have you looked at other Computer manufacturers sites lately?
I have not because my Powerbook does everything I need and of course more, without the worrie of virus’s….

Also, that educational section doesn’t look very good when viewed in Lynx. I think we can safely rule out the use of Flash on their main pages.
