MAYAns In The Snow

This morning I awoke to actual snow and as I have spent the whole of my life in central Texas, snowfall is exciting stuff. Today also marked the completion of my first week as visual designer for MAYA. No, not the 3D software company, the multi-faceted design firm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Rather than labor to condense what MAYA is and does into a concise, if not limited description I recommend you peruse the MAYA site to get a feel for what we do (I am still figuring this out myself).

To say I am flattered and excited by my opportunity at MAYA is an understatement. Every person I have had the pleasure to meet here is truly outstanding. I am amazed by their work and thrilled to learn from them, much less make a contribution. I have learned more about design and what it means in four day’s time than I have in a great while.

Pittsburgh is great as well. To be honest, my perception of Pittsburgh prior to experiencing it first-hand was well, not so stellar. Come to find out, Pittsburgh is beautiful, culturally rich, packed with creative energy, and of all things affordable. If you haven’t visited, you should. While here you should check out the Andy Warhol Museum, the great art galleries (there are still a number I want to visit), the Mattress Factory Museum (which is an installation art museum and one of the few of its kind), the great neighborhoods, and warm people. An additional bonus is close proximity to Mr. Santa Maria in Philly – hello Jason.

As you might imagine, having only been here a week, I am still living out of boxes and awaiting dsl (internet connection) at home. Luckily one of my neighbors has an open wifi network ;-) Posts and other activities here on smallTransport will pick up once I am settled.

So, if you are in Pittsburgh or know something about it, let me know or fill us in via a comment below. If you have any advice for surviving the cold and snow I would love to hear that too (I have yet to acquire an ice scraper for my windshield).

  10. Welcome to da ‘burgh. If you’re the beer-drinking type, it will serve you to know the best places for a decent pint are Piper’s Pub (Irish) in the South Side, D’s SixPax and Dogz (800+ beers) in Regent Square, The Church Brew Works on Liberty Ave, and the Sharp Edge (lots of Belgians on tap) in Friendship.
