Things Are a-Changing
I am writing from the comfort of a sofa at a local coffee and each visit I make here to receive and respond to email, put in a few hours of work, and all other tasks necessitating an Internet connection I get stuck on the notion of ‘Internet connection as commodity’ and how quickly things have escallated along these lines over the past few years.
In the early days we early adopters fought to download information over our 14.4kb/sec modem connections and now I sit at a mom and pop coffee shop in the suburbs near my in-laws accross from a lady, not unlike my mother, working on her Web site (of all things) over a wireless broadband connection. I noticed an article in the New York Times last night that Internet sales reached $18.1 billion nearing a 25% increase in sales volume from the previous holiday season indicating of course that more folks are wired and adopting the notion of shopping the virtual storefront.
